El Salvador’s Chivo wallet is ‘95% fixed,’ President Bukele

A week after Bitcoin (BTC) has become the legal tender in El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele expresses how big a challenge rolling out the state BTC wallet has been.

El Salvador’s Official Chivo wallet has been currently disabled for new registrations, halting app downloads for smartphones. The pause is a result of ongoing issues in the app, Bukele has said through a Tweet on Monday.

He further clarified that both registrations and downloads would be enabled for users once the pending issues are resolved, adding that the Chivo team is expecting to resume registrations “in a couple more days.”

Further in the tweet, Bukele informed that technical errors in the Chivo wallet “have been 95% fixed” and that it would start “working at 100%” in a few days. He noted that the country’s 200 Bitcoin ATMs presently “work perfectly,” in addition to 50 Chivo-supported ATMs in the US.

As per Bukele, the newly launched Chivo wallet had collected more than half a million users since its launch last Tuesday.

El Salvador had launched the wallet in partnership with Mexico’s Bitso, which is a “core crypto service provider” for Chivo. On the launch day, Chivo faced significant issues, going offline for maintenance every few hours. Although Chivo’s prompt efforts in resolving the issues were noticeable, users have continued to face problems in transactions and withdrawal. Some users even claim that the app functionality on the launch day was “almost zero.”

Bukele admitted that launching everything in just three months was exceptionally challenging. Although the government “made mistakes, but are already fixing them” so that Salvadorans can quickly enjoy the uninterrupted experience in the crypto app.
